About the 2022 Avant Foundation First Year Medical Student Bursary

The Avant Foundation’s purpose is to invest in research, education, and leadership programs in order to improve quality, safety and professionalism in medicine. The Avant Foundation delivers this Bursary in partnership with Flinders Adelaide Indigenous Medical Mentoring (FAIMM) and the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA).

The bursary is valued at up to $15,000 and is intended to assist an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander medical student with living or study expenses in 2022, related to relocation, or other activities to support study. 

Who can Apply?

Applicants must satisfy the following criteria to have their applications considered:

  • Applicants must be a current AIDA Indigenous Medical Student Member by the application closing date. If you are not a member, you can apply here
  • Have a demonstrable commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health as evidenced in the application form responses.  
  • Be enrolled in your first year of an undergraduate or a postgraduate degree in medicine in 2022. Applications must be accompanied by a letter of offer to a medical degree undergraduate or postgraduate study program for 2022. 

What will the successful applicant/s be required to do?

The successful applicant will be required to provide the following:

  • Obtain and provide written confirmations of enrolment by the bursary award date. 
  • Provide a mandatory short report/article/interview outlining your experience as a first-year medical student for use in AIDA and Avant Foundation publications, websites, and on social media. A report is required in the middle and end of the bursary. Payment of the bursary is in two instalments and is dependent on these milestones being met. 
  • Be available to undertake any media interviews relating to the bursary and how you will use it. 
  • Agree to have your application and contact details shared with the Avant Foundation. 
  • Agree to share your progression through your degree with AIDA and the Avant Foundation. You will notify us of successful progression to second year at the conclusion of the bursary.

Selection process

AIDA will appoint three members to a selection committee that will assess applications and select the successful applicant. The selection committee may request more information from applicants, which may include a telephone interview if necessary. The selection committee’s decision is final. There will be no appeals process.
