Acknowledgement of Country
AIDA acknowledges the Gubbi Gubbi / Kabi Kabi people as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which this Cultural Immersion takes place. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and recognise the enduring connection of the Gubbi Gubbi / Kabi Kabi people to Country, culture and community.
Event Details
This Cultural Immersion experience offers participants a deeper opportunity to connect with local Aboriginal community, culture and Country on the Sunshine Coast. The immersion takes place on the lands of the Gubbi Gubbi / Kabi Kabi people and is guided by local Aboriginal cultural educators.
Delivered in partnership with TribalLink and grounded in local knowledge, the immersion creates space for learning that is relational, place-based and community-led. Participants will engage with lived history, cultural practices and contemporary perspectives shared on Country, supporting deeper understanding through connection, reflection and respectful engagement.
Designed as a companion experience to AIDA’s Cultural Safety Workshop, this immersion moves beyond classroom-based learning to foster meaningful relationships with community and place.
The immersion will take place onsite at the TribalLink Activity Centre in Mapleton and includes:
- Welcome to Country
- Ochre paint up
- Artefacts and tools
- Short bush tucker walk
- Guided learning covering key historical and contemporary topics, including:
- Frontier Wars
- Life on the Mission
- Aboriginal Protection Orders
- Historical and current perspectives
Lunch and afternoon tea are included as part of the experience.
This immersion is intentionally framed as an extension to AIDA’s Cultural Safety training, providing participants with the opportunity to consolidate and deepen prior learning through community-connected, experiential engagement.
Why attend
Cultural safety is strengthened through time, place and relationship. This immersion offers participants the opportunity to learn on Country and engage directly with local community, supporting a deeper understanding of how history, culture and systems continue to shape lived experiences today.
By participating, you will build on the foundations of AIDA’s Cultural Safety Workshop through an experience that centres the knowledge, authority and voices of the Gubbi Gubbi / Kabi Kabi people.
What you’ll gain
Participants will:
- Deepen their understanding of local Aboriginal history, culture and contemporary realities
- Learn directly from community through guided cultural practices, storytelling and shared experience
- Reflect on the ongoing impacts of history and policy in contemporary contexts
- Strengthen their ability to engage respectfully, thoughtfully and accountably in their work and communities
- Consolidate Cultural Safety learning in ways that support humility, responsibility and ongoing practice
Who this is for
This Cultural Immersion is available only to:
- Participants registered for the Sunshine Coast Cultural Safety Workshop on 18 July, and/or
