The Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA) announces that Chief Executive Officer Donna Burns will complete her term this year, in line with the planned three-year tenure.
Under Ms Burns leadership, AIDA has achieved significant milestones that have strengthened the organisation’s impact and positioned it for continued growth. Key achievements during her tenure include:
- Securing more than $7.5 million in funding to support AIDA’s programs and operations.
- Expanding the Cultural Safety Program, including establishing a landmark partnership with the Australian Football League (AFL).
- Building a high-performing, values-driven workforce committed to advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
- Strengthening AIDA’s national profile and influence in health policy, advocacy, and workforce development.
- Revitalising member engagement through events such as Igilyawa and PRIDoC 2024.
Reflecting on her time at AIDA, Donna said:
“I am proud of the outcomes I have achieved at AIDA, the team I have built, the connections made, and the ongoing and genuine commitment to improving Indigenous Health. It’s been a privilege to lead this team, and the work of AIDA. I wish everyone ongoing success, and I am excited about what the future holds. One thing is for certain, I remain determined to improve health outcomes for First Nations Peoples and our Planet.”This planned leadership transition is aligned with the finalisation of AIDA’s Strategic Plan, which will be launched later this year.
Recruitment for AIDA’s next CEO will commence shortly, with the objective of appointing a leader who will continue to uphold AIDA’s values and vision, building on the strong foundation in driving improved health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
On behalf of the Board, President Dr Jonathan Newchurch expressed deep appreciation for Ms Burns contribution:
“Donna’s leadership has been instrumental in strengthening AIDA’s foundations and expanding our influence nationally. Her achievements leave a lasting legacy, and the Board is committed to ensuring a smooth and respectful transition as we enter this next strategic chapter.”
Further information regarding the CEO recruitment process will be provided in due course.
