Why Thursday Island?

Life on Thursday Island is a blend of island tranquillity and cultural vibrancy. Known locally as Waiben, TI has been home to Torres Strait Islander peoples for thousands of years, and its cultural traditions, music, dance, and community events are woven into everyday life.

On Thursday Island, you’re not just a clinician — you’re a lifeline for multiple islands. The hospital provides general medicine, maternity services, and 24/7 emergency care, supporting clinics spread across turquoise waters.  As a rural generalist providing obstetrical care, you become part of the story of families, babies and community.  Your role will be varied – you might stabilise a patient in the morning, coordinate care with an outer island nurse via telehealth after lunch and finish the day with a sea breeze on your walk home.
