About Garma Festival

Garma Festival is Australia’s largest Indigenous gathering, a 4-day celebration of Yolngu life and culture held in remote northeast Arnhem Land from 2 to 5 August.

Hosted by the Yothu Yindi Foundation (YFF), Garma showcases traditional miny’tji (art), manikay (song), bunggul (dance) and storytelling, and is an important meeting point for the clans and families of the region.

The Festival’s overriding cultural mission is to provide a contemporary environment for the expression and presentation of traditional Yolngu knowledge systems and customs, and to share these practices in an authentic Yolngu setting.

The Event

Over the years, Garma has also become the premier platform for the discussion and debate of issues affecting Yolngu and other Indigenous Australians – a place where the freshwater and saltwater meet.

The event is held at Gulkula, a Gumatj ceremonial site about 40kms from the town of Nhulunbuy on the Gove peninsula in northeast Arnhem Land. It’s one of the world’s truly great cultural gatherings!
